Princeville is steeped in history. It was founded in 1837 by Robert Prince, an English immigrant who had been granted land from the federal government. In its early days it was an agricultural community whose main industry was farming. As time passed, other industries started to appear such as coal mining and manufacturing.

Politically speaking, Princeville votes primarily Democratic but there are pockets of Republicans throughout the area as well. The town has had its share of political scandals over the years including a corruption scandal that rocked the city council back in 2005.
